I would say this game is a 4/5, quite good for what it is.

The main pain point is the bossfight, although there are some mechanical issues throughout the game. I'll try to describe them since it seems no one else is (despite the developer asking).

General gameplay issues:

  1. It is very hard to tell when your boost is done charging, as well as how close it is to being done. The first issue can be solved by adding a halo or some other indicator when the boost is ready. But for the second, you might want to add a secondary bar in the side panel that repeats or replaces the boost charge gauge.
  2. Sometimes it can be hard to tell where your boost will put you. A ghost where you'd end up could solve this issue
  3. The upgrades seem pretty uneven in how useful they are, but maybe that's to be expected

Boss issues

  1. The boss is likely[1] too much of a difficulty jump, leaving a long-ish time where everything before the boss is easy but everything after hard
  2. Because the boss is so hard, it becomes almost pointless to continue into it until you're maxed out on upgrades. You won't beat the boss and you'll likely collect very few resources before you die.
  3. The boss's tail. I like that if feels tron-like, although the new mechanic came a little out of left field for a boss that's otherwise a bigger version of the other bad guys. However, frequently what will happen is I will try to boost behind the boss to stun, only to realize I was a milisecond too late, and the tail has popped into existance and insta-killed me. I would suggest either delaying when the tail becomes deadly, reduce the hurtbox on it, or have it so the stun also destroys an unconnected tail.
  4. The hit/hurtboxes in general should probably be reduced. If I boost near the boss in a safe spot and then he swivels and the tip of his nose touches one of my corners, that's insta-death. This is one of those times you should probably cheat for your player to make the game feel better.
  5. You might consider making infinitely repurchaseable upgrades after all the other upgrades are purchased, to keep the feeling of progression during the final stage, instead of it feeling like just slamming your head against the wall over and over. Alternatively, if other changes make the bossfight more managable, perhaps make a final upgrade that lets you skip the upgrade page (since it's now pointless--no more upgrades available)

Possible improvements

  1. The two most fun parts of the game are the collection/upgrade loop, and boosting through enemies. The former falls off later in the game as collecting becomes more of a slog and there are fewer killer upgrades left. To make the later part of the game better you might consider adding extra boost gauges as an upgrade, so people can have more fun blasting through their enemies. It might require a bit of a difficulty rebalance, though
  2. As a webgame, this game has the perfect amount of content, but if it's going on steam where people pay for it, it will probably need more bosses, enemies, and upgrades. I might suggest an enemy that has some version of the boss's tron tail, to get players used to that mechanic
  3. Also, the name is not great.

I made an account to post this feedback, so I hope it's helpful.

[1] Different games target different difficulty curves so it's hard for me to say for sure what a difficulty curve "should" be. Some players want animal crossing and some want dark souls. However, a sharp spike in difficulty is a sign to me of game needing better balance.

Honestly wow.

Thank you so much for your feedback, even made an account for it, I am genuinely amazed.

I would love to discuss with you further and answer everything, but I think it will probably be easier to communicate on Discord rather than here if you want.

In short, I agree with basically everything you said, and everything is on its way, consider that this is very early in development and much more content and polish is planned.

The only thing I don't quite agree is the boss feeling not worth the grind, consider that during it everything has reached max value, and later on you also get resource multiplier to boost your economy even better and it is basically much better to farm during the boss rather than before it.

Maybe make the resource multiplier immediately unlock at the boss, and then make it upgradable.

But overall I agree that especially early on it is too difficult to survive during the boss fight.

I would still love to discuss it further on Discords :)

This is really a great game. Looking forward to the release.

Thank you so much!

Awesome game.  Love the upgrade system.  Feels fair and balanced, up until the boss fight.  Boss is brutally hard, even after the last upgrade (the boss mechanics are counter-intuitive, but eventually you get used to it).  Did manage to beat it eventually after getting all the upgrades.

Thank you for your feedback!
Why do you think the mechanics are counterintuitive?
Also congrats on beating the game! Would love for you to enter our Discord server to share your time and keep being updated!

i could play this 10 hours straight no cap

Very fun game and upgrade tree. The boss fight was a little frustrating, but once you get all upgrades, it's just a matter of beating the game. I'd love to see multiple 'worlds' with different enemy types and bosses for each. This game is certainly worth the playthrough.

Thank you so much for your feedback, why is the boss frustrating?

So sometimes it would seem like the boss would hit a wall in a way I wouldn't expect (because of it's large hitbox). When it would do so, its forward line would complete instantly and kill me. It would mostly happen when we were both near an edge and it would charge at me nearly parallel to the edge, but slanted just enough to hit the wall and cause the said effect. It didn't seem like it was an intentional mechanic and I compensated by only fighting well within the borders. Perhaps it was a skill issue on my part, but that's just my perspective. I do think the overall boss fight was well designed and fun.

Thank you so much for your feedback!

Unfortunately though I don't seem to understand exactly what happens, a video of the bug happening would be a huge help for us if you can do it!

If you want to help, join the Discord server and send a recording of the bug there :D

Very fun

Thanks a lot!!!

anyways if it wasnt for the boss battle alg woulda been faster.

Trial Time: 44:15

Trials: 68

EZ

Bit more story and lore to the game would be nice, things such as, what is time, what are we, why are we existing, why are we fighting time and a time keeper, etc.

(+1)

Congrats on beating the game, I suggest you to enter the Discord server to share your time with the community also try the downloadable version as there is basically no lag and you should improve your time a lot

As for story and lore, there will be indeed a very deep one, the first minute is just an introduction :D

Additionally regarding the dahs, maybe make the dash bar indictor larger and wider? Also make it a rectangle, instead of pointed, because its harder to tell when the charge bar is pointed and thin. Alternatively, remove the charge  bar and only make it show up when fully charged, or you could try putting it above the player (box), outside the area, or using the color of the player as an indication, like maybe they flash when ready, though i forsee problmes with lag. Just my opinions though,  use what you want.

(1 edit) (+2)

annoying cause it lags out way too much on bossfight and im playing on web. I don't wanna reset my skilltree T-T

Edit: Could you also do something about the wall collisions? Dashing while touching a wall completely deletes it. I suggest making the user slide along the wall if dashing next to a wall

(+1)

Turn off particles in the settings.

(+1)

We definitely plan on implementing an import/export save.

As for the dash, the slide was how it worked previously, but it had some other problems (sliding uncontrollably against enemies or trails) also it won't work with a new upgrade that's coming in the feature :)

(+2)

A bit of advice: Maybe you could make an indicator of the dash being ready; a different color, a highlight, etc. It is quite hard to tell whether it is ready, and I have died many times due to incorrectly concluding that I can dash in the circumstances.

(+1)

Totally agree, do you think making the dash aim glow when ready would fix the issue?

Yes, I think it'll do quite well.

Yes, I think it'll do quite well.

Really good although some of the buffs don't help since I couldn't get many triangles after maxing out the time start

We get this feedback a lot, it is a matter of skill, time jump helps you beat the game faster, but sometimes you can't keep up with the boss and you would like to farm more before it, I think an undo button of upgrades would help

57 minutes with 74 runs. Not too bad.

Overall I really enjoyed it, keep up the good work.

Thank you so much and congrats on beating the game!

I would love for you to enter our Discord and share your Time with the rest of the community!

I tried downloading the game and it doesn't work. It just crashes when I try to run it.

Hardware: Windows 10 x64

Btw, when you exported, did you codesign the program? If so, how, because that might be why its crashing

This seems very strange, do you mind entering our Discord and make a bug report?

(+1)

Interesting. I really wish the final boss fight wasn't instant death. Also, make it so the dash bar changes color when it's full. It's too hard to tell.

Thank you for your feedback!

You are totally right on the glow.

As for the boss, the game is meant to be very challenging, did you manage to beat the game eventually?

Time keeper's trail lags the game.

(+1)

Unfortunately Godot is not built to support web builds well, we try our best to optimize as much as we can, but I suggest you try the downloadable version as it is much better :)

(1 edit)

very fun game and this is my first try. keep going i had so much fun i hope for new cool updates :)

(+1)

Congrats on beating the game!

We are actively working on a content update!

Can't wait to share more informations on that!

(+1)

hehe

(+1)(-1)

Started playing this on a laptop. Was disappointed to see that mouse controls were required for the Dash. May be worth mentioning that, if not adding an option to dash in the direction you're moving (like Space)

(1 edit)

There is the option that does exactly that on the settings, but it's not ideal, as you have less control

(+1)

59:33 minutes, JUST UNDER AN HOUR, WITH 160 TRIAL COUNTS!!! that final boss was so difficult but i got it eventually, I'll wishlist this on steam! Sick game!

Congrats on beating the game!

An hard challenge is so satisfying to conquer!

Would love for you to enter our Discord Server and share your Time and so that you don't miss any update!

Such a good game, the music was amazing and the tech was fun, I look forward to the full steam version!

Hi!

Try to click "more information" open anyway :)

(+1)

45 minutes and 70 trials later I beat the game. Played it alongside my girlfriend and we both had a blast. However, We agreed that adding a clearer indication whenever the dash ability is ready, would be nice. We both found ourselves using dash, slightly before it was ready. Great game! It's on my wishlist - looking forward to seeing what you'll be implementing.

Thank you so much for playing and. Congrats on beating the game!

I would love for you to enter our Discord server to share your Time and not miss any updates!

We already have in plan to make it clearer when the dash is active able, we were thinking of making it glow, do you think that would be enough?

Anyways unfortunately we can't seem to figure out how to make the glow work in web, the downloadable version has it and it is much better!

Ah, that's awesome! I think making it glow would fix it right up. As for the discord, I might just drop by and say hi :)

(1 edit)

Had a time of 49 mins and 103 trials great game. The only thing I didn't quite like was the bosses trail I think it lasts too long. My dash dmg didn't register at times too but thats probably bc of my low-end device and playing in the web version

(+1)

Thank you for your feedback!

The trail lasts until the 4th one gets created, ensuring that there are always 3 active every time.

As for the collisions, definitely that, but also that unfortunately Godit is not well optimized for web builds, I suggest you try the downloadable version as it has much better performances :)

This game is giving me nodebuster vibes, but I'm enjoying it, have a good day :)

(+1)

That is one of the inspirations!

The upgrade tree for example :)

Great game very balanced, maybe add more upgrades for more time if they can't beat the boss with current upgrades. But its very doable when you line boss up with enemy spawn and the abundance of adrenaline if you miss.

Thank you so much!

Congrats on beating the game!

Join out Discord server and share your time with the community, we have an ongoing speedrun challenge

(+1)

My two biggest complaints about the game are: 1.Invincibility ends as soon as your dash ends, meaning if you undershoot you suffer a penalty. And 2. The bosses trail seems to ignore invincibility all together. If the boss corners you with its trail, its essentially game over because you can't dash through it.

Thank you for playing

1 there could be an upgrade that extends the invincibility, but it won't increase the hit frames

2 that is a very weird and pretty critical bug, sorry for the frustration, could you please enter our Discord and send a video? Pc specifics? I think it was from browser right?

I love difficult games, but the one-shoting boss is more annoying then fun, if maybe it did good damage, and the lazer things disabled your dash for a second he might feel fun, and or smaller lazer hitboxes, it feels like i'm miles away then, boom, run over.

(+1)

Thank you for playing!

If you like difficult games this is for you!

About the boss trail, do you think the hitbox is bigger than the actual visuals?

(1 edit)

no, i don't think the hit box is bigger, but it can feel like that at times is what i'm saying, when you are on your twelfth try on the boss, and the have two pixels overlapping with the trail and instantly die, it doesn't feel difficult, it feels annoying, and frankly poorly done, and the rest of the game feels like a perfectly crafted, where you can always do something better, or catch back up if you fall behind, the boss gives so little flexibility that it feels like it was ripped out of a different game.

(Edit: also, sometimes the trail and the boss isn't affected by invincibility)

(sry about the paragraph, I do love this game, and just want to give as much feed back as possible)

(+1)

Don't worry about the paragraph, actually, thank you for the feedback, I would love to chat more with you on our Discord server, to share more feedback and suggestions.

I agree with the game feeling frustrating at times, in fact hitboxes/hurtboxes are one of the aspects that we spent less time on tuning, we are going to look into it immediately.

About the invincibility, that is a very bad bug, could you explain better when does it happen?

Thank you for everything!

as for the invincibility bug, it seems now like it might be more or less that when you dash at certain angles the invincibility won't activate for the full duration, but it flashes for a moment, and i am not good at tearing into the backbone of stuff, but if you are spawning different entities to make the trail expand that could be the reason.

(+1)

Which angles?

And also why do you think spawning multiple entities for the trail segments may be the problem?

(+1)

maybe add another stamina upgrade to make it deplete slower, during the boss fight you have to rely on good enemy spawn rng so they spawn inside/near the boss so you don't run out of stammina.

i do know it's part of the challenge, but it seems a bit too hard, at least for me.

Thank you for playing!

There is no RNG involved in the game, everything is deterministic, even the spawn points of enemies and resources.

Regardless, we do get a lot of feedback on the game being too hard, we definitely need to add difficulty settings, or, yeah, tone down the difficulty with more upgrades etc...

(+2)

this is a great game to pass time i feel like ,very immersive (pun intended)

(+1)

Thanks! But don't get stuck in it!

nice game but only a small issue with the WebGL version

bad device = lots of lag, and when there's lots of lag, dashing doesn't deal damage even though i have the upgrade for it.

maybe to make it more tolerable, either make an upgrade that increases the dash hurtbox, or have it to where there's an extra display option that should tone down the lag that all the enemies make

(either that or disabling particles isn't working. i cant really tell tbh)

Hi, we are glad you like it.
We know the web version right now has some performance issues, we already optimized a lot but it's not enough, I think it's due to the poor compatibility of Godot with WebGL, we will try to improve it as best as we can, but the game should be played from Desktop.
The version here on Itch it's just a showcase, we will release a Demo on Steam also.

The bug you mentioned (the enemies not taking damage) is due to the collision happening between 2 physics frame and it's a consequence of the low fps, we can't do much except trying to optimize the web version further.

Thank you anyway for the feedback!

boss is too difficult to fight!!! i try it for 2 hours!!!

Hi! We have received some feedbacks about it, the game being difficult is intended but maybe right now it's too much.
We plan to add difficulty settings soon!

(+1)

may I ask what gave you the idea to make this game? aside from that the games really fun and a great way to pass time in class

(+1)

Thank you!

The idea comes from many reflections on game design, and what actually makes a game fun.

We also took inspiration from many games we played, like Vampire Survivor and Node Buster for example

(+1)

Really enjoy the game so far! The cursor dash feels very snappy, and hitting Vampirism combos by chainkilling the Dashers feels very fun! Additionally, I love the sound design! It sounds very crisp, for lack of a better word.

Unfortunately, I did find a bug that completely prevents progression and forces the player to delete all of their progress. If you manage to die at the exact same time as you kill the TimeKeeper, the game will proceed as usual, showing the dialogue box. As expected, the game kills you upon finishing the dialogue box. However, when you restart the fight, none of the inputs work, and the TimeKeeper never starts attacking. The only buttons that work in this state are Escape and Pause. Additionally, if you pause and unpause while the game is like this, the blue orbs will infinitely spawn!

Also, I'm unsure if this is a consequence of the bug or not, but restarting progress via "Reset Run" or "Reset Everything" prevents any progression on starting a new file. Instead, when the player presses play, the game starts like normal, but no blue orbs or Dashers spawn. Additionally, no upgrades appear on the skill tree.

Don't let the above criticism get you down, I've truly enjoyed playing this game! It's quite fun, and I wish you luck as you develop it further!

Thank you so much!

We are glad you enjoyed the game so much!

And we are truly sorry for the bug you experienced :(

Don't worry, we don't take it badly, on the contrary! Thank you for the bug report, that is one of the weirdest bugs we ever heard about, that we would have definitely missed if it was not for you!

Could you please join our discord server so that we can investigate this further and hopefully fix the bug?

Also, a temporary fix could be to download the game, that should come with a totally blank save with no issues.

Thank you again so much <3

Sure! And I have now done so. Would you like me to retype the bug in the Discord chat?

Thank you so much!

Yeah if you don't mind in #bug-reports it helps as keep things organized as we will go to look there during bug fixing and it helps if they are all in one place so it is easier to not miss any of them!

(-2)

Please add an upgrade that skips more time. It's so tedious having to go through a bunch of basic enemies when I've purchased every upgrade and just want to fight the boss.

(1 edit) (+2)

There is actually, you can start directly from 60s

Have you looked in the upper part of the tree?

(+1)

Pretty good, though I have major complain on the dash control. It is very unintuitive. I think there should be a cursor that points to where you dash rather than having the direction constantly update to the position of the hitbox.

Thanks! Actually you are right, we thought about that and we are working on it too.

We just pushed an update with the exactly this feature. If you want go check it out!

im sorry but i cant acsess the full version because of windows defender

Unfortunately we need a license to make that security message disappear, and that license is pretty costly. You can still download it by clicking more information and download anyway!

(+1)(-3)

You can only pick one, choose wisely. Get that license or remove the full version and move all exclusive features to the brower version. This is mandatory

Deleted 25 days ago
(1 edit)

there are not really exclusive features in the download version, just some visual effects that we can't figure out how to make them work on the web version. Also it is because Godot, the engine we are using to make the game, is not really optimized for web builds, so we try to make it work regardless since it is convenient to try it out there, but eventually, the downloadable version will always be superior to the web version

(-3)

IT IS NOT CONVENIENT TO TRY IT OUT THERE

(+2)

We give the choice to you, if you don't find it convenient you can download the game for the best experience, others may find it convenient to try out the web version first.

(+1)

why does the boss one shot you even with max defenses? kinda unfair tbh

Hi!
We are sorry you feel like it is unfair.
But we love challenging games, have you tried maxing out your upgrade tree?
It should get easier, and an hard challenge is all the more rewarding once you finally beat it :D

yes, i did max out the upgrade tree

and no, i did not even get close enough in the process for it to feel remotely winnable

you have to constantly kill the small enemies and collect the orbs or else you die in 10 secs and

you also have to avoid both the boss and the trail or else you get one shotted, even if the trail is already fading it still one shots,

and a hard to see one-shot combined with extreme fast pace and precision demanded makes the boss fight feel very unfair

I totally get your feelings.

We love difficult games, think of this as a 2D Dark Souls lol.

But yeah a difficulty settings is probably required, although it will need a bit of time

The main issue I had with the boss was the trail extending behind it once it started dashing. Many times I dashed through the boss only for him to start dashing and me land in the trail resulting in instant death. Dodging the trail and the boss was not an issue, but an instantly spawning laser behind the boss after his attack really frustrated me and not in an "oh man I know what I did wrong but I'll get them next time!" kind of way.

(+1)

I see, it also happens to a me lot during playtesting, the idea is that "parallel" dashes are very dangerous because of the trail, you should always try to dash perpendicular to it. Meanwhile, we are working on a fix to make it feel less frustrating, like foretelling better when its dash starts.

(+1)(-1)

I can't stomach playing this anymore because of you killing off the cursor when the game has focus. And I've removed it from my list to play later because I saw someone on reddit suggest how to fix it and you gave a vague response.

Good luck with your future efforts, but if your game was worth keeping an eye on, there's no way you would have shipped it with this type of mouse mistake in the first place. Absolutely no competent dev would playtest that and keep it that way.

Thank you for your feedback.
And I am sorry I seemed vague, but actually we were working non stop on the game to release an hotfix, which we released just now, I would like for you to try it out one more time, as the cursor is not killed anymore, and it should resolve any issues you have encountered.
To justify our choices, it was because we were actually thinking of making an hybrid system that could work both on joypad and on mouse.
This probably too ambitious feature, combined with the fact that this was developed for a jam and we only had 2 weeks to work on it, as well as us in the team becoming accostumated to it, made us overlook this core system of the game, and we are sorry for the inconvenience.
I sincerely hope this update will solve all the issues you have encountered!

(+2)

Neat concept, but the mouse control in the game is borderline unplayable. It would be much better if the dash just pointed to a cursor.

It was awkward when it would rotate without it pointing to a cursor, but at some point that broke and it would only rotate if I held down one of the mouse buttons.

Thank you so much!
Yeah we are getting a lot of negative feedback on the aim controls, we definitely have to rework them, thank you for letting us know!

Bigly huge improvements with the mouse cursor!

We were working hard on it!

We are glad you are enjoying them!

Are you able to beat the game now?

If so, remember to post your time on our Discord server!

(1 edit) (+1)

The skill tree is awesome. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much!
Which Upgrade is your favourite? :D

(+1)

The upgraded dash that speed up the loading time when i kill.

Oh yeah, the flavour text of Dash Killrush says it all: DIE DIE DIE!!!
